FANFARA STATION

Fanfara Maghreb Dance Party

3711813955.jpeg

Fanfara Station is a trance-inducing celebration with a brass band, an entire North African rhythm section and pumping electro dance beats – all created by just three musicians, thanks to some skillful use of loop stations and live overdubbing of an arsenal of instruments.

Inspired by singer, composer, woodwind wielder and noted percussionist Marzouk Mejeri’s father’s Tunisian marching band, the Italy-based trio throws down a dance party that celebrates Mediterranean migrations with an intoxicating, funky musical and rhythmic mix of the cultures of the African diaspora and southern Europe's ancient links to the Middle East, the Maghreb and the Americas.  Joining Marzouk is Kentucky-born trumpeter and trombonist Charles Ferris who layers on loops and drops glittering improvisational flourishes while master programmer Ghiaccioli e Branzini (Marco Dalmasso) directs the dance-floor dynamics.

Fanfara Station's live shows are festive affairs, filled with the sounds of a myriad of instruments: scascika, tar, bendir, darbuka, tabla, trumpet, trombone, clarinet, and Tunisian woodwind instruments (nay, mizwed and zocra).  Dozens of wires run across the stage connecting loop stations, controllers and an array of effects pedals creating an irresistible pulse and powerful textures. Over the top, a wide range of acoustic and electric sounds interact and sustain the enthralling vocals of singer-songwriter Marzouk.

It is no surprise that Fanfara Station was honored in 2019 as the winners of the 12th Edition of the Andrea Parodi Italian World Music Awards and was an official selection at WOMEX 2020.

Fanfara Station is:

  • Marzouk Mejri (voice, percussion Tunisian winds & loops)
